Day 1 (Travel day)

The days prior to this trip had been spent preparing a significant RFP response and trying to get some family time so I was somewhat less prepared than usual for this day. Out of bed at 06:45 and the usual weekday morning routine with my wife and the children which for me involves keeping out of the way. I travel a lot and even when I am in the UK I leave for the office at 06:45. This morning I had the justifiable excuse of some packing that I had to do. At 08:30 we took my youngest son to school where we stayed to watch his class assembly, home by 10AM for an hour and a half of RPF preparation and final packing before leaving the house at midday for my eldest son’s academic review day. Mad traffic due to road works meant we got there just in time, his best report yet and we had planned to take him out for lunch but the mad traffic was madder and we opted for a McDonalds at the airport before they dropped me off at 2PM. I live near an airport with no flights to anywhere useful so it was down to the bus station to buy a ticket to Heathrow. 2:30 -3:00PM was a conference call with a US west coast lawyer on a different project I arrived at Heathrow at 5:00PM for an 8PM flight. That was my nice relaxing day and now an 11 hour flight in economy class to Johannesburg, arriving at 8:30AM and a days work ahead of me.
